The account

This is the prosecution account. It places Tyler Robinson, who is charged with the killing, on the roof of the Losee Center with a scoped bolt-action rifle, described in the charging documents as a Mauser-action .30-06.

The exact spot on the roof has not been published. The model puts a prone figure and rifle at the south-west point of the main roof, in the middle of the only stretch of roof edge that has a clear line to Charlie.

What the model shows

From the muzzle to Charlie’s neck the model measures 127.8 m (140 yd), angled 9.4 degrees downward. Nothing in the model touches that line.

Only a short part of the roof edge works. Along about 11 m of edge at that corner, roughly 6 m has a clear line. A further 1.3 m is clear only if the upper glass of the Sorensen Student Center addition is set back from its roof edge the way the model assumes. From the remaining 4 m the addition is in the way. The coloured strips on the roof mark these three zones.

On its way in, the line passes about 0.6 m (2 ft) above the head of Hunter Kozak, who was standing at the audience microphone.

The roof corner from above. Green: clear line to Charlie. Yellow: clear only if the Sorensen addition’s glass is set back as assumed. Orange: blocked by the addition.

Where the line ends. It meets the seated figure at the neck.

What has not been tested

The line is straight. Bullet drop and wind are not modelled; over 128 m they are small, but they are not zero.

The coloured strips were worked out for a line to Charlie’s head, 14 cm above the neck point now used. They have not been recomputed.

The figure’s height (1.78 m), its exact place along the roof edge and the proportions of the rifle are assumptions.

Scenarios are interactive studies for investigation, not findings.
